We're delighted to announce that we are finalists in the category of Charity of the Year in the AOP Awards 2020, run by the Association of Optometrists (AOP).

We entered the awards after recently launching a new five-year strategy and committing to becoming the largest funder of eye research in the sight loss sector – funding £6m of internationally important research per year, by 2023.

Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “We’re honoured to be shortlisted in the AOP’s prestigious awards which will continue to raise awareness of the vital work we do.

“Macular disease is the biggest caused of sight loss in the UK in every age group; children,working age people and the older generation. It is a cruel and isolating condition which steals your sight, your confidence, your independence, and the ability to do the things you love.

“And yet, despite the devastating impact of macular disease, little is known about its causes and there is still no cure.

“We want to bring hope to people with macular disease and their families. As the largest charity for people with these conditions. It is our duty and responsibility to work to find a cure for macular disease.”

We're now relying on the public vote and are encouraging people to vote for us for the accolade. Voting is open until 5pm on Wednesday 18 December. Results will be announced on Sunday 26 January 2020.
