Employment webinar to tackle sight loss challenges
Posted: Wednesday 02 February 2022Have you experienced difficulty finding a job as a result of your sight loss? Finding a job can be a challenge at the best of times. But, it can be so much harder to find work when you have a sight condition.
To tackle this problem, the Macular Society hopes to overcome the hurdles faced by people with visual impairments in England and Wales at an upcoming employment webinar in March.
“I know it generally takes someone who is visually impaired twice as long to find work,” says Colin Daniels, the Macular Society’s Working Age and Young People’s service manager. “So, it is not only important to have the right skills to find a job, but it is also important to understand the barriers and how to overcome them.”
Colin will lead the webinar, alongside Macular Society regional managers Adele Francis and Marian Williams. They will be joined by guest speakers Tina Hewitt of JobSense Wales and blind archer Nick Thomas, development officer with North Wales Society for the Blind.
The event will look at the perceived and real barriers to employment for those with sight loss and cover areas including the difficulties which can come up during the job application or interview stage, disclosing your sight loss condition and the benefits of volunteering. The session will also discuss Access to Work, a Government scheme which can help you get or stay in work if you have a disability or physical or mental health condition.
Colin added: “We hope this webinar will provide some useful information and help people overcome the many challenges they face when seeking employment.”
The webinar via Zoom will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 1 March, ahead of National Careers Week. Registration for the session is now open.
