After playing a key role in the Macular Society’s Christmas appeal in 2024, ten-year-old Archie is stepping up his fundraising efforts as he plans a new challenge to raise vital funds for research.

Archie was featured in the appeal with his mum Sian, each sharing their experience of living with Best disease.

After taking part in the appeal, Archie, who was diagnosed with the condition at 7 and a half years old, was inspired to do more to raise vital funds for research, he was inspired to do more.

Archie's fundraising challenge

In 2025 he will be running a 5k race, taking on a cycling challenge and holding a series of cake sales to help Beat Macular Disease.

To prepare for the challenge Archie has been taking part in ParkRuns events with his mum Sian, his sister Summer and stepdad, Derek.

“I am looking forward to my run and cycle challenge,” he said.

“I’ve been out on my bike most days, and Summer, Mum, and I have been following a running programme. I hope to complete the run without stopping, but I know the support on the day will help.”

In addition to training, Archie has been practicing his baking skills for the cake sales he’ll be holding at his school, and for his football team.

A drive to Beat Macular Disease

Archie’s mum Sian, who also has Best disease, has previously taken part in her own fundraising for the Society, including running the Brighton Marathon last year. She is also a member of the organisation’s research panel.

“I love the fact Archie is carrying on supporting the Macular Society,” she said.

“When I ran the marathon last year Archie kept saying he wanted to do something, the Christmas appeal just gave him the drive. He also aims to hold a few bake sales and commit to training to give people hope of a brighter future.”

She added: “From supporting the research panel I have realised how much can be done with everyone’s donations, every penny does count to a future without macular disease.”
