When Sian was first diagnosed with Best disease, a rare genetic eye condition, she was just a child. She barely remembers the details, only that she got a day off school and visited the Tower of London. Decades later, the condition she had almost forgotten about resurfaced - this time, affecting her young son, Archie.
First UK hearing and sight loss survey launched

The first survey in the UK to collect data on vision and hearing loss has been launched. The UK National Eye Health and Hearing Study, aims to record data to inform the NHS and policymakers and is a collaboration between sensory loss charities, Anglia Ruskin University, eye and hearing care professionals and the public sector.

For macular researchers
The Macular Society has two calls for grant applications each year. In April we invite applications for Research grants and PhD studentships. In July we invite applications for Seedcorn grants.

Travel grants
Our grant programmes
Each year five grants of up to £2,000 each are available to enable early career researchers working in the field of macular disease to attend the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual meeting in the USA, where they are presenting work.
